The Spokesperson for Uganda Police Force CP Fred Enanga has said construction works along Nakawa – Nagulu stretch, disrupted the operation of CCTV cameras, and denied investigations the much-needed evidence to prove the actual cause of Ritah Nabukenya’s death.

Ritah Nabukenya, a supporter of People Power died under unclear circumstances last week, with police issuing several statements citing injuries sustained in a road accident as the cause of her death.

People Power supporters have since refused to accept this, saying Nabukenya was deliberately knocked down by a police vehicle, and demanded that police should avail roadside CCTV footage to settle the matter. Police has since come out to state that CCTV cameras along that section were not working.

In a latest statement, Fred Enanga says the cameras along the section of road from where Nabukenya met her death were out of operation at the time of the incident, following disruptions in the fiber optic underground cables caused by construction works.

Enanga says the public must be aware of the demand for services offered by utility companies like UMEME, National Water and Sewerage Corporation, KCCA, who regular conduct works that at times disrupt normal operations in the city.

Enanga however said the IGP has already tasked the Directorate of ICT to regularly check the CCTV system, and ensure that every camera deployed is working. He also said Police is closely working with City authorities to adopt technologies for construction that minimize disruptions of underground constructions.

Police also say the public must be aware that where there are no optic fibre disruptions, CCTV cameras are working at full capacity, and streaming clear images to the Monitoring and Command Center.

The statement noted that investigations into the death of Ritah Nabukenya are progressing well under Traffic investigations Unit, while Regional CID officers are investigating the shooting in Nansana in which one Dan Kyeyune lost his life.
