The ruling National Resistance Movement’s top decision-making organ (CEC) has admitted to flaws in the recently concluded membership register update exercise, and resolved to revist the process for better results.
This comes after a meeting of NRM Central Executive Committee members at State House Entebbe on Thursday, in wich the party secretariat reported back on the registration process that took place between the 13th and 17th of this month.
After the meeting, the NRM national chairman, President Yoweri Museveni, provided an update;
“There were some gaps in the process, such as the criminality of money lenders who take away national Identity Cards from Ugandans and the limited involvement of NRM village chairpersons and we have agreed to address those, through legislation if necessary and return to the people at an appropriate time” President Museveni reported.
“Despite these gaps, a large membership of up to 18.3 million has been reported and I think it is a good start to this ongoing process. I thank NRM members for responding to the program.” He noted.
At the launch of the 5-day register update process in all 72,000 villages / branches, Mr Museveni said the register was now in the hands of the village NRM members who know themselves and warned leaders against last minute conversions from other political parties have to be scrutinised carefully before being registered as NRM members.
Upon it’s conclusion, the Secretary-General of NRM, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, declared the exercise successful across the country.
“I have monitored the display and updating of our membership register, and I can confidently declare that it has ended peacefully with a few concerns,” Todwong said.
Todwong however revealed that the updated ‘Yellow Books’ would later undergo a thorough review at zonal centres before data is fed into the digital bank as some areas there was low turnout.
“The party leadership shall review the process and offer guidance.” Hon. Twodong said.
