A family of three and one other person died after their boat was carried by the river Nile current towards Kiira Power station, whose spillways were open to release excess water.
ESKOM the managers of the dam confirmed the Sunday evening incident, saying a family on tour and a lone boater who tried to rescue them were washed through the spillway.
According to a statement from police, Hassan Alwi (father), Shakira Super (mother), Alwi Amirror (child) perished by drowning under the Nile Bridge where the dam is situated. Hassan Alwi was the Director of International University of East Africa.
The police rescue according to the DPC Central Police Staion Jinja, Hasunira Ahamed, teams managed to save Jafali Alwi (12 years) and Okidi Patrick (39 years) and the two are currently undergoing treatment at Nile International Hospital in Jinja City.
Police says the security manager ESKOM reported a case of drowning to Nalufenya Police at around 1730HRS and it was registered under SD REF: 09/30/08/2020.
The boat according to police, developed engine failure as the family headed for a tour of the Source of the Nile before it was swept by the river current together with it’s occupants.
