African heads of state have pledged support for a peaceful resolution in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
In a virtual meeting chaired by South African president Cyril Ramaphosa and attended by Uganda’s president Museveni, Abdel Fattah el-Sis of Egypt, Azali Ossuomani of Comoros, Senegal’s Macky Sall who is also Africa Union Chairperson, Haekinde Hichilema of Zambia, and Denis Sassou Ngueso of Congo Brazaville, declared their move to embark on a mission of peace in the ongoing crisis.
“We need to confirm that we are embark on mission as Pan-African leaders and we desire peace” Ramaphosa said.
African heads of state are set to travel to Ukraine and Russia to discuss a potential peace plan to end the war between the two countries.
The heads of state believe Russia and Ukraine can benefit from the African petspective of peace, and are aimed at seeing the two countries engage in meaningful negotiations that will bring an end to the conflict.
“This war affects all of us and it can get worse than it is now. It threatens world peace. I think Africa has got good credentials in solving problems like that of South Africa, Congo, Somalia, etc..” President Museveni said during the meeting.
Museveni noted that the Russia-Ukranian conflict has affected Africa highlighting the effect of sanctions that have affected Banking and Marine ttansport, among others.
He thanked Cyril Ramaphosa and all organizers for setting up a meeting to discuss Africa’s voice in contributing to the crisis.
