NAGGALAMA, Uganda — 30 September 2025: A serious multi-vehicle accident involving the convoy of National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Honourable Kyagulanyi Sentamu left at least six people injured on Monday, prompting the police to issue a stern warning against reckless driving by political entourages.

The crash occurred on Monday, September 29, 2025, on the Kalagi to Kayunga Road near Namyoya Village while the NUP candidate was heading for Jinja for his campaign launch. Preliminary police investigations suggest the accident was a chain-reaction collision caused by reckless riding and driving within the convoy.

According to police, the incident began when a high-speed motorcycle in the NUP entourage collided with a vehicle from behind. This collision triggered a pile-up involving several other motorcycles. Subsequently, a white Mitsubishi vehicle (registration number UAZ 064H), decorated with the candidate’s campaign images, also crashed into the pile of motorcycles.

The accident was registered at Naggalama Police Station. The involved vehicles, including the Mitsubishi and several motorcycles (UFQ 569H, UGH 892B, UEK 351T, UFQ 250Q, among others), have been towed to the Naggalama police yard for further inspection. Investigations are ongoing.

Six individuals, identified primarily as motorcycle riders and passengers in the convoy, sustained injuries and were rushed to St. Francis Naggalama Hospital. Some with minor injuries reportedly left the scene. Four of the injured were later referred to Mulago Referral Hospital for specialized treatment due to the severity of their condition. They are:

* Kewanza Bashir (27, passenger): Sustained multiple injuries, including a maxillary fracture.
* Kakaire Bashir (35): Suffered multiple injuries and wounds.
* Ssepereza Musa (40, passenger): Sustained multiple injuries and a fracture to the right leg.
* Mutagubya Robert (24, motorcycle rider): Suffered multiple injuries, wounds, and a fracture.
Two others remain admitted at St. Francis Naggalama Hospital:
* Kisomba Michael (28, motorcycle rider from Nansana): Has multiple injuries, a fracture on the right leg, and chest pain.
* Ssewaya Eric (23, motorcycle rider): Sustained multiple injuries.

In their statement, the police issued a strong warning to all political actors and their entourages to adhere strictly to traffic regulations.

“Irresponsible use of the roads, as demonstrated in this incident that caused multiple injuries, will not be tolerated,” the police statement read. “The Police will enforce strict measures to prevent such conduct and ensure adherence to the law.”

The police also noted a prior related issue, reporting that campaign boards displaying photos of Robert Kyagulanyi had been placed in the middle of the road, causing obstruction to traffic and other road users earlier in the day. Political actors have been urged to comply fully with traffic regulations to avoid similar incidents.

Kyagulanyi responds: Before setting off for campaigns in Kaliro and Luuka on Wednesday, Kyagulanyi spoke to members of his entourages thanking the drivers for adhering to traffic rules and police guidelines. He also urged them not to block the traffic as it may also put their lives in danger.

Kyagulanyi also noted that security has not yet blocked his movements or that of his supporters however warned his entourage not to give them (security agencies) a reason to do so because that’s what they looking for.

“They (security) have not started blocking our convoys, throwing tear gas on us or shooting at us using bullets. But there are some of you who violate the traffic guidelines by straying from their lanes. You must not do that again because we will have given them a reason.” Kyagulanyi remarked in what looked as a pre-departure briefing.

He told NUP “foot soldiers” that their actions during campaigns are being watched on all media including international media therefore they must take caution.
