The army court in Uganda has sentenced a UPDF soldier to 90 years for killing two people.

Pt. Lotukei Paul attached to Bukara army detach, 06 Mountain Battalion 222 Mountain Brigade was convicted with two counts of murder contrary to sub section 188 and 189 of the penal code act. The Mountain Division Court Martial Sitting at Muhoti Barracks in Fortportal, found him guilty of two counts of murder contrary to sub section 188 and 189 of the penal code act chapter 120.

It is alleged that Lotukei killed a mother and her son in Kyakasinga trading Centre in Bunyangabu district two weeks ago following a disagreement over payment of local brew. Witnesses said that Nayebare confiscated Lotukei’s phone for failing to pay 1000 shillings.

Court heard that on October 30, 2020 at about 8pm, Private Lotukei with malice aforethought, unlawfully and intentionally shot and killed one Pamela Nayebale, 26 and her nine-month son, Owen Kusemererwa after an argument with the former over a mobile phone in a bar. Lotukei later returned with a gun and shot dead Nayebare and her son.

Lotukei was sentenced to 70 years for the first count and 90 years for the second count. He will serve the the sentence at Kyenjojo prison.

“Basing on the gravity of the offence committed and the evidence produced by prosecution, the sentence is appropriate and this should serve as a lesson to others. UPDF is a people’s army that has zero tolerance to criminality, “Court Martial chairman Felix Nyero said.
