The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has dropped criminal charges against three Police Officers who had been accused of conspiring with Business Tycoon Abid Alam to defeat the course of justice.
The Officers include D/SGT Azale Wilson, D/ASP Muhanuzi Peter Baitera and ASP Ogwellan Daniel Robert attached to attached to Wamala Regional Police Headquarters and Kasanda Police Station respectively.
The trio were charged for unlawfully releasing information to Abid-Alam in a case file where he Abid-Alam was the subject.
The officers allegedly committed the offence on 8th/April/2020 between Mityana Regional Police Office and Ntinda a suburb of Kampala, and have since denied the charges.
The police officers are out on bail.
However, prosecution’s Janet Kitimbo informed Buganda Road Court Grade One Magistrate Acaa Ketty Joan that charges against Abid Alam and D/SP Wanyama Wilber Osteen attached to Wamala Regional Police Headquarters, still stand.
The new development was communicated in a withdrawal letter dated 1st/June/2020 signed by the Jane Frances Abodo, the Director of Public Prosecution.
Abid Alam and D/SP Wanyama have now been ordered to return to court on 8th/July/2020 as investigations into their case continue.
Abid was arrested in April/2020 by State House Anti-corruption Unit headed by Lt Col Nakalema for masterminding violence and torturing residents of Bukompe village in Kasanda District.
The case originates from a long-standing land dispute between Alam and some residents in Kassanda District in which a lot of property has been destroyed and other acts of criminal nature perpetrated.
