KAMPALA, UGANDA: 08 September 2026— President Yoweri Museveni has extended his condolences to Tanzanian counterpart Samia Suluhu Hassan following the passing of her husband, Hafidh Hassan, paying tribute to his quiet support behind President Suluhu’s leadership in East Africa.
In a formal message released to President Suluhu, Mr. Museveni expressed deep sorrow on behalf of himself, his family, and the people of Uganda, offering prayers for strength during what he described as dark days for the Tanzanian First Family.
”It was with a lot of sadness that I received the bad news of the death of your dear husband, Mr. Hafidh Hassan,” President Museveni stated. “I extend the most heartfelt condolences from the brother people of Uganda and from my family and myself, to Your Excellency, your family, and the people of Tanzania.”
Reflecting on his working relationship with President Suluhu, which spans her tenure as Vice President and now as Head of State, President Museveni commended her dedication to Tanzania and the wider continent. He noted that such commitment to public service was undoubtedly anchored by the backing of her late husband and immediate family.
Mr. Museveni highlighted several key regional infrastructure and economic initiatives spearheaded jointly by the two nations during their leadership, including:
Energy & Infrastructure: The construction of the Murongo-Kikyagate mini-hydro power station and the Masaka–Bukoba electricity transmission line.
Trade & Logistics: The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), cross-border tarmac road networks on the Tanzanian side, and the planned extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Isaka to Uganda.
”The dedication you show must have been supported by your dear husband and family,” President Museveni wrote, also recalling previous interactions with the Tanzanian First Couple’s son, Abdul. “It must, therefore, be a great loss to you. I pray that the Almighty God sees you through these dark days. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
