National Unity Platform president Robert Kyagulanyi has distanced himself from reports that opposition MPs Allan Ssewanyana and Muhamad Ssegirinya negotiated their freedom out of prison.
The two opposituon MPs were this week granted bail by a High Court in Masaka after seventeen months in prison on terrrorism-related charges. Following their temporally freedom, reports have since alleged that their freedom was negotiated by top opposition leaders.
Kyagulanyi however says he is not aware of such negotiations and he never endorsed them.
“Let me be categorical that I do not know about any such negotiations and anyone who took part in negotiations to secure bail for detainees did so without my knowledge.” Kyagulanyi noted in a statement releaded today.
The opposition politician aka Bobi Wine however stated that he is happy that the two MPs are out of Kigo Prison after a long time. He said he has not spoken with the MPs as their families told him the MPs still undergoing treatment.
In his statement, Bobi Wine however noted that his party’s position does not accomodate negotiations with president Yoweri Museveni and “a criminal regime” to grant them God-given rights.
President Museveni has been inequivocal on his position against bail especially for suspects in capital offenses. The new twist in the case against the two legislators left many people beleiving that Museveni might have had a hand in their release possibly through negotiations.
Unconfirmed reports claim the negotiations coukd have been spearheaded by DP president general Nobert Mao in colloboration with top level NUP politicians.
Bobi Wine said he hopes to meet the two MPs in the coming days and guide the nation on way forward.
