The Election Management Committee of National Unity Platform (NUP) has nominated Latif Sebaggala to carry the party flag for Kampala Lord Mayorship dropping Singer Joseph Mayanja also known as Chameleon.
In the on going process to choose party flagbearers ahead of the 2021 general elections, Emmanuel Serunjoji (Kawempe Division), Paul Mugambe (Nakawa Division), Kasirye Nganda Ali (Makindye), Zadoch Mawula (Lubaga), Hamdan Semugooma (Central Division) were picked to contest for Mayorship of 5 Divisions of Kampala.
The lists issued today presents nominees to contest for Local government positions across the central region including Mayors, Division Councilors, Women and Youth councilors and heads of Division, Municipal and Town Councils.
According to a notice published on NUP’s social media platforms, all aggrieved persons may lodge appeals to the Election Management Committee at central region offices in Lubaga, Kampala. However, NUP says selection of Members of parliament will be conducted next week.
The appeals according to the chairperson Election Management Committee Mercy Walukamba, must be submitted by September 20th 2020 at 4:00PM and must state specific grounds on which the appeal is premised.
The new party opted to select candidates through consensus rather than competitive elections partly due to time constraint and lack of administrative structures to undertake the process.
The process which started this week involved assessment conducted by the committee on the individual’s potential to win the vote judging from popular support and possession of required credentials for the position as set by the national Electoral Commission.
As it stands, Latif will face off with the incumbent, Erias Rukwago (FDC), NRM’s Daniel Kazibwe also known as Ragga Dee, Democratic Party’s Beatrice Kayanja, and Jose Chameleon if he insists running as an independent candidate.
