ADDIS ABABA – The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has extended his congratulations to His Excellency Paul Biya on his re-election as President of the Republic of Cameroon, following the official proclamation of the final results by the country’s Constitutional Council for the presidential election held on October 12, 2025.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Chairperson acknowledged the election outcome, which confirms President Biya’s victory and re-election. 92 years-old Biya has been in power since 1982 and the elections have been marred by violence with opposition claiming that there was massive rigging.
Grave Concerns Over Post-Election Unrest
Despite the congratulatory message, the AU Commission Chairperson expressed grave concern over reports of post-electoral violence and a crackdown on dissent.
”The Chairperson is gravely concerned about the reported violence, repression and arrests of protesters and political actors in connection with the election results,” the statement noted.
- In light of these developments, HE Mahmoud Ali Youssouf issued a strong call to all political and institutional actors in Cameroon to “exercise restraint and work towards the preservation of social cohesion, peace and stability.
Call for Inclusive National Dialogue
The central focus of the Chairperson’s address was an urgent appeal for reconciliation and inclusivity. He specifically urged the Cameroonian authorities to “accord topmost priority to inclusive national dialogue and consultation with all political stakeholders.”
This crucial dialogue is intended to help the country “reach consensus in the spirit of national unity, peace and collective security.”
The AU Chairperson concluded by reaffirming the African Union’s unwavering commitment to support the people of Cameroon in their ongoing efforts to “consolidate democracy, social justice, and the rule of law.”
