The Chief of Defense Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also the Senior Presidential Adviser for Special Operations, visited the joint forces operating in Eastern DRC on Thursday.

The joint operation forces, known as Operation Shujaa, comprise the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC).

Gen Kainerugaba landed in the North Kivu Province and then proceeded to the neighboring Ituri Province, where he held discussions with commanders and militants about Operation Shujaa. He was welcomed by the Commander of Operation Shujaa, Maj Gen Richard Otto. The Ugandan CDF was accompanied by several high-ranking officials, including the Commander Land Forces, Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, Artillery Division Commander Brig Gen Dan Kakono, and Col Albert Kashakamba.

In his remarks to the troops, Gen Kainerugaba expressed his gratitude for their patriotic work in fighting ADF terrorists. As such, the CDF gave the troops a combined Christmas and New Year lunch.

He also challenged them to completely eliminate the remaining ADF fighters, emphasizing that both President Yoweri Museveni and President Felix Tshisekedi have tasked the forces to complete the mission before the end of this year. Some soldiers promised to capture the remaining ADF commanders, particularly one known as ‘Bwakasi’ (Abu Wakasi), alive.

The progress of Operation Shujaa was evident during the visit, as civilians were seen engaging in routine activities, such as transporting goods and conducting agricultural activities. However, some abandoned houses covered with shrubs were also visible, serving as a reminder of the devastating impact of ADF terrorists before the commencement of Operation Shujaa.

Launched in November 2021, Operation Shujaa has achieved significant milestones, including the resumption of normal life for civilian populations and a substantial reduction in attacks on Ugandan territory. The operation has also severely diminished the capacity of the ADF to organize, with several senior commanders killed. Currently, the ADF exists in small groups, operating in areas outside the jurisdiction of Operation Shujaa.

Gen Kainerugaba promised to return to the operation area, challenging the troops to ensure the enemy is completely decimated. His visit underscores the commitment of the UPDF and FARDC to working together to address shared security concerns and promote regional stability.
