Pakwach, Northern Uganda: In a shocking incident that has left the community reeling, a Mobile Money agent was kidnapped, tortured, and held for ransom in Pakwach. The victim, Prudence, is currently undergoing medication to restore her physical and emotional well-being.

This incident is not an isolated one. In recent months, several mobile money agents and individuals have been robbed, killed, or harmed in various parts of the country, including Kampala. Areas such as Kisenyi, Katwe, and Bwaise in Kampala have witnessed a spate of such attacks, leaving many agents and residents living in fear.

More recently, the murder of Albert Cook, brother to the Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, in Ntinda, Kampala, has sent shockwaves through the community. This incident, among others, highlights the growing concern of violent crime in the country.

According to eyewitnesses, Prudence was abducted by unknown assailants at around 11:30 am on December 6, 2024. The kidnappers, who were reportedly armed and masked, tied Prudence’s hands and feet, covered her mouth, and tortured her.

In a chilling twist, the kidnappers recorded a video of Prudence, showing her in a distressed state, and sent it to her husband, demanding a ransom in exchange for her safe release. The husband, who was understandably distraught, immediately reported the incident to the police and coordinated with friends, including local journalists, to track down the kidnappers.

The journalists, utilizing their network and resources, contacted the Elite Crime Intelligence Rescue Team, who sprang into action to rescue Prudence.

As luck would have it, the kidnappers, realizing they were being tracked, abandoned Prudence locked inside an isolated home. However, as luckier one would be, they left her with a small phone containing an agent line, which ultimately led to her rescue.

We commend the journalist who played a crucial role in coordinating the rescue efforts with both the territorial police and the Elite Crime Intelligence Rescue Team. Their relentless efforts helped ensure Prudence’s safe release. We also applaud the effective use of technology in this operation. The use of coordinates was instrumental in tracking down the kidnappers and rescuing the victim.

The relatives of Prudence extend their deepest appreciation to Twiine Mansio Charles and Joseph Sabiti for their pivotal role in facilitating a timely response from the elite Crime Intelligence Elite team. Their swift action was instrumental in saving Prudence’s life, a testament to their unwavering commitment to protecting and preserving human life.

To the perpetrators, although you may have disappeared without a trace, rest assured that you have left behind evidence that will be meticulously processed by investigators. Your days of freedom are numbered, and you will soon face the full force of the law.

As we continue to pray for Prudence’s full recovery, we urge everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. Together, we can create a safer community for all. In the words of a local resident, “We must look out for one another. Being a good neighbor and watching out for suspicious activity can go a long way in preventing such crimes.”

The police have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to apprehend the kidnappers. As the community remains on high alert, police urged all Mobile Money agents and residents to exercise extreme caution and report any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately.

Prudence’s unfortunate experience serves as a stark reminder of the importance of collective vigilance and community solidarity in preventing and responding to such heinous crimes.
