Namibia’s President Dr. Hage Geingob has died while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in the country’s capital, Windhoek.
The 82-old leader had been diagnosed with cancer and revealed his diagnosis to the public last month.
“It is with utmost sadness and regret that I inform you that our beloved Dr. Hage G. Geingob, the President of the Republic of Namibia has passed on today, Sunday 4 February 2024 at around 00h04 at Lady Pohamba Hospital where he was receiving medical treatment from his medical team. At his side, was his dear wife Madame Monica Geingos and his children” a statement from office of presidency confirmed.
Dr. Geingob, who also served a 12-year stint as prime minister, had a history of health problems that preceded his election as Namibia’s third president in 2014.
In 2013, the anti-apartheid activist-turned-politician underwent brain surgery, and the following year he revealed that he had survived prostate cancer.
The statement notes provide details about the diagnosis but states that cabinet will convene with immediate effect in order to make the necessary state arrangements for his send off.
Meanwhile, the country’s Vice President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba takes charge as president of the Republic of Namibia in acting capacity.
