Tragedy befell inmates at Luzira Women’s Prison on Wednesday April 12, 2023 when a female convict pounced at a fellow inmate and hacked her to death.
The spokesperson of Uganda Prisons Service Frank Baine said the victim Aguti Zainab 77 years of age passed on at Luzira Women Prison Health Center III after she was hit on the head with blunt object by a fellow inmate.
Baine identifued the killer woman as Bainomugisha Joan aka Mbabazi (37 years old) who has been serving a 19 year prison sentence on a case of murder.
Zainab, according to Baine was murdered in the ward at around 5PM as she was cleaning and weeding flowers when Joan pounced on her and left her for dead.
Baine notes that prison staff who were on duty rushed to restrain the killer woman and took the victim to the health facility where she died.
He however notes that Joan -the murderer had been in isolation meaning that prison authorities knew she was dangerous but at the time of the incident she had been let out to do routine exercise.
He says police has since took over the matter but also prison authorities have already reached out to Zainab’s family to come and pick the body for burial.
