The KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka has said that it is the University graduates working in the feild who should play a vanguard role in national transformation.
Kisaka was contributing to the debate on the role of universities in National transformation at Makerere University. The Symposium was organised by Makerere University. The Chief guest was H.E. the president and keynote speaker was Prof Vincent Anigbogu from Nigeria.
“The quality of our university qualifications must be demonstrated at work. The graduates of the universities have the solutions through innovation. Having education and degrees is not enough, it must translate into national solutions to the many problems we face” Dorothy Kisaka said.
Kisaka said it requires an integrated approach, understand the national vision, the ideology at play and work in your space of leadership to solve the problems.
This means that university graduates in key leadership roles should diagnose the problems of the institutions they lead and come up with innovative ideas to adress them.” She added.
She gave an illustration from her current leadership position at KCCA where the city management is looking for innovative ways to transform city gangs into responsible citizens who contribute to production by doing work for money.
Under this initiative, She noted that the unemployed loitering youth have been organized into SACCOs known as Seven Hills. With a membership of over 3000 the group is now involved in cleaning, dislting landscaping in the city in all five divisions.
Kisaka who has done post graduate studies in leading innovation and change said, continuous learning and consistent improvement is imperative. “The more we learn, the better we become. We should also use that knowledge to equip others.”
