MPs Allan Ssewanyana (Makindye West) and Muhamad Ssegirinya (Kawempe North) have finally been granted court bail.
The duo who have been on remand for more than two years on treason-related cases were granted 20 million non-cash bail (each) by the High Court in Masaka.
The development followed withdrawal of state objection to MPs’ bail application.
The proceedings against the two opposition MPs took a new twist today when senior state Attorney Richard Birivumbuka told court that the DPP had issued a certificate of no objection to the bail application and required them to withdraw the affidavits they had filed against the MPs bail application.
Earlier, court rejected Hon Joseph Gonzaga Ssewungu, Ibrahim Semujju Nganda, Ali Kasirye Mulyanyama, Hon Moses Kabuusu and Hon Florence Namayanja’s who had been presented as sureties for the suspects on grounds that they didn’t have LC1 letters.
Later after court adjournment, Moses Kasibante and Joseph Ssewungu were allowed to stand surety for Allan Ssewanyana while Florence Namayanja and Thomas Bagonza were admitted as eligible sureties.
Their sureties were however directed to pay 50 million non-cash and have the MPs passports deposited with court until further orders and to report once every month at the registrar ICD.
The two MPs have also been directed to The MPs were also directed not interfere with the police investigations into their case.
