Nine people have been confirmed dead in floods that ravaged three villages in Kisoro, South Western Uganda on Monday.
According to Uganda Red Cross, 8 bodies have so far been recovered from mud and debris after heavy rains which pounded the area on Monday triggered disastrous floods and mudslides that swept away houses, crops as well as people.
The affected Sub-Counties include Nyarusiza, Muramba and Bunagana all in Kisoro District.
Uganda Red Cross spokesperson Irene Nakasiita said 4 of the deceased are from Kabale and rukeri villages while the other 5 are from buzeyi village.
“8 bodies have been retrieved so far. The 9th (still missing) is a child that was caught up by the mudslide while running; so no one knows where exactly to dig.” Nakasiita posted on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.
“Gasiza trading centre in Nyarusiza Sub- County has been heavily affected by heavy rains and flooding. Houses are submerged, roads are impassable, some structures have collapsed.” She said in a tweet.
“A number of houses have been destroyed, some are submerged & some roads are inaccessible due to heavy stones, and mud.” she added.
The bodies were recovered through efforts by response teams from locals, government and teams from Uganda Red Cross which is on ground to support the affected communities.
