A total of 58 people perished in road accidents that occurred during this year’s Christmas festive season and 190 survived with serious injuries, Uganda police has reported.
According to the incident report by the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety issued on Monday, a total of 195 accidents occurred between 23rd and 26 December 2021 out of which 51 were fatal, 93 were serious and 51 were minor.
Out of the total incidents under the road user category, 248 accident victims were registered during the festive season with 58 deaths while 190 sustained injuries.
The report further shows that of the 58 victims who died during the festive season, 17 were motorcyclists, 13 were pedestrians, 7 were drivers, 7 pedal cyclists, 4 passenger in other vehicles, and one was a passenger in heavy omnibus.
No passenger travelling in medium omnibus and light omnibus died during the festive season according to the police report.
Police noted that majority of the accidents (171) were caused by reckless driving, 17 were hit and run, 5 were caused by careless pedestrian while 2 were of other causes.
During the same period, 3,070 traffic offenders were arrested at various checkpoints across the country majority of whom were charged with reckless driving.
Police noted that despite the many fatalities and injuries were registered, none of them happened at known black spots since deployment had been made at those points.
