Ashraf Kasirye, a journalist attached to Ghetto media has been injured as police dispersed supporters of National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine.
Ashraf Kasirye was reportedly shot on Sunday morning and rushed to Masaka hospital in critical condition.
“Comrade Ashraf Kasirye has been shot and is in critical condition. Doctors are doing their best to save his life, “Kyagulanyi posted on his social media accounts.
Whereas details surrounding the incident are still scanty, it was reported that police was trying to disperse supporters who were following Kyagulanyi, by firing tear gas and bullets. The photographs circulating on social media show an incapacitated Kasirye bleeding and being carried to hospital.
The Electoral Commission (EC) on Saturday suspended campaign meetings in 12 districts around the country over the rising cases of coronavirus infections including Masaka District.
While issuing the statement over the matter, EC chairman Justice Byabakama stated that any candidate who violates the directive will face consequences.
However, according to the National Unity Platform, Kyagulanyi was not campaigning in Masaka but was on his way to Lwengo.
It is said Kasirye was on top of Kyagulanyi’s vehicle as the presidential candidate returned from church in Masaka on his way to Lwengo District where he is scheduled to hold campaign meetings.
Reports also indicate that another journalist and NTV reporter Ali Mivule was also injured after a tear gas canister hit his leg. The Uganda Police Force is yet to issue a comment on the matter.
