The Ministry of Public Service has prescribed deadlines for public servants aspiring to contest for various political offices in the forthcoming 2021 general elections in which they should resign as required by the law.
In a letter signed by the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Public Service, Ben Kumumanya, all public servants wishing to contest for political positions must resign their current offices by 31st October, 2020.
Public servants aspiring to run for Parliamentary seats shall resign not later than 12 July, 2020 while those vying for positions in Local Councils must resign by 6th August 2020.
Public servants wishing to represent Special Interest Groups in Parliament are required to resign by 7th August, 2020 while those who want to contest for presidency shall resign not later than 31st October 2020.
Section F-p of the Uganda Public Service standing orders 2010, provides that a public officer who wishes to contest for a position in a political party, he or she is required to retire if he or she qualifies in accordance with the Pension Act or resign from the public service.
“In line with the above, this is to instruct all public officers who want to participate in the forthcoming elections to adhere to the deadlines indicated in the Revised Electoral Roadmap as stipulated” part of the statement reads.
