Police in Bugiri District in eastern Uganda are hunting for an unidentified armed assailant who shot and killed one of the area imams.
Sheikh Masudi Mutumba was shot dead at his home in Busimba Village, Iwemba Parish, Iwemba Sub County Bugiri District on Friday at around 9PM. Police confirmed the news on their website.
“The Uganda Police has registered a case of murder by shooting of Sheik Mutumba Masudi. Our task teams from Busoga East Regional Police are still documenting the scene of crime and gathering critical intelligence” Police Spokesperson Fred Enaga said.
A source in the area said Sheikh Mutumba was seated outside his house chatting with his wife who was in the kitchen preparing supper when the assailant shot him several times.
The shooting happened just hours after a circular warning police territorial commanders of an ‘invisible threat’ leaked on Friday. However, police spokesperson Mr Fred Enanga later said there was no credible and specific threat against the country.
“As always, we shall only provide the public with information about threats that is credible and visible. It usually includes the various steps they can take to better protect themselves, their families, businesses and communities. The public is therefore asked to go about their businesses normally without any fear, but still encouraged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity to police,” Mr Enanga said.
