KAMPALA UGANDA: 28 SEPTEMBER 2026- The morning sun streamed through the Jinja Road glass facade, reflecting the focused energy inside Victoria University’s main auditorium. Laptops flipped open, notebooks were readied, and seats filled with academic deans, department heads, and executive support personnel—all anticipating a day far beyond a routine administrative retreat.
Stepping onto the stage was Tim Abel, whose career features senior leadership roles at Dell, Microsoft, and Google. Bringing the authority of an insider who has navigated multiple digital revolutions, Abel addressed the audience with practical, frontline relevance rather than corporate detachment.
”Artificial intelligence is not a distant storm on the horizon that academia must brace for,” Abel noted. “It is an engine that is already running. The only question for an institution like Victoria University is whether you intend to sit in the passenger seat or take the wheel.”
Throughout the day, the auditorium functioned as an interactive lab. Abel demystified large language models and neural networks, replacing complex jargon with real-world applications tailored to the university’s hands-on learning model.
He demonstrated how academic staff could build adaptive curriculum outlines, generate real-time case studies, and leverage AI as a research co-pilot. For administrative and executive teams, he introduced frameworks to automate workflows, streamline data processing, and resolve scheduling bottlenecks.
When a senior lecturer voiced a common concern—asking how to protect the human element of teaching when machines can process information so rapidly—Abel stepped out from behind the podium.
”AI will never replace the empathy, intuition, and mentorship of a dedicated educator,” Abel said. “AI will not replace humans. But human beings who master AI will inevitably lead those who do not. Your job isn’t to compete with the technology; it is to use it to amplify your human potential.”
The discussion sparked immediate engagement. During hands-on sessions, faculty members tested prompts, automated lesson plans, and developed custom administrative templates.
Reflecting on the impact of the initiative shortly after the workshop, Victoria University Vice Chancellor Dr. Lawrence Muganga emphasized that upskilling university personnel is directly tied to student success.
”When our staff understand AI and become comfortable using it, that knowledge does not stop with them,” Dr. Muganga shared on social media. “It finds its way into the classroom, into student support, and into the everyday experiences we create for our students. Our goal goes beyond simply teaching students about AI. We want our graduates to leave Victoria University with the AI literacy, practical skills, and confidence to take on today’s labour market, create opportunities for themselves, and contribute wherever they find themselves.”
Dr. Muganga added that bringing in US-based experts led by Abel was a deliberate move to tap into deep industry expertise: “That is why we have brought in experts from the United States, led by Tim Abel, a former Microsoft, Intel, and Dell executive and an experienced technology and AI expert, to lead this training and share what they have learned from years in the technology industry.”
As the workshop concluded to a standing ovation, the staff of Victoria University departed equipped with both practical tools and the confidence to guide their students into an AI-driven economy.
