Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: 01 December 2025– The U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam has issued a security alert warning U.S. citizens in Tanzania of potential widespread disruptions linked to anticipated anti-government demonstrations starting as early as December 5, with nationwide calls for protests on December 9.
The alert advises travelers and residents to prepare for possible unrest and strict security measures.
The Embassy noted that recent unrest following the October 29 elections led to violence, destruction of public property, and significant travel impediments, including internet shutdowns.
The alert specifies that U.S. citizens should be prepared for: Potential Unrest: The risk of civil disturbances across the nation. Curfews and Blackouts: The possibility of nation-wide curfews and an internet blackout. Travel Cancellations: Possible cancellation of ferries to Zanzibar and international flights, as well as roadblocks enforcing strict movement controls.
Calls for the nationwide protest on December 9 are ongoing, driven by youth activists demanding the resignation of President Samia Suluhu Hassan following the contested October election. Suluhu was declared winner of elections in Tanzania with 98 percent of the vote in a process which was marred with violent protests, arrests and death of estimated 2000 people.
In the alert, the US Embassy highlighted that following the recent unrest, foreign nationals have faced increased attention from local security authorities.
Security forces have reportedly been searching electronic devices for evidence related to unrest or for politically sensitive content. The alert reminds the public that under Tanzanian law, sharing pictures or videos that may cause panic is a criminal offense.
The Embassy also warned that its ability to assist travelers in danger may be limited during a period of unrest.
The U.S. Embassy strongly urged citizens to take several precautionary measures: Avoid demonstrations and crowds, Stock up on essentials (water, food, medication, fuel, and cash) in case of “shelter-in-place” requirements. Comply with announced curfews and be mindful of local laws. Confirm all flight details via telephone before traveling to the airport. Review personal safety plans.
