Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sam Omala has passed away due to cancer-related complications. He had been receiving treatment at Mulago Hospital where he breathed his last on Monday morning.
Omala, who served as the Kampala North Police Operations Commander, retired from the police force in 2020 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60. He became famous for leading efforts to quell opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye’s “walk-to-work” protests in 2011.
Following his retirement, Omala lived a quiet life until 2023, when he was appointed Deputy CEO of Operations at Arrow Security Systems Limited, a private security firm owned by Captain Mike Mukula.
In November last year, Omala’s son, Mutukuvu Devine Omala, revealed that his father had been struggling to speak but had expressed a desire to issue a public apology. Mutukuvu shared that Omara had been battling cancer for some time and was initially taken to Nairobi for treatment.
After stabilizing his condition, Omala requested to return home but a few days later, his health worsened, and he rushed to Mulago Hospital. Reports about his deteriorating health condition started circulating on Sunday 25, April 2025 after his family confirmed that he was on life support.
“Arrow security systems LTD with deep sorrow announce the death of our Director Operations and deputy CEO SAM OMALLA (RIP) and retired at the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP).He has just passed on in mulago hospital at 7 am after a long struggle with cancer.” Capt. Mike Mukula broke the news of Omara’s death.
