Opposition Justice Forum also known as JEEMA have urged National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi to freely declare his position on homosexuality, and stop demonizing fellow leaders.
JEEMA was responding to comments Kyagulanyi made during his visit to UK, implying that his party members and opposition fellows worked with president Yoweri Museveni to introduce the Anti-Homosexuality (AHA), which most western governments deem to be repressive.
During an interview with BBC, Kyagulanyi a.k.a Bobi Wine did not state whether he supports the AHA but said the law was introduced to target the opposition. The former presidential candidate also did not confirm if he would repeal the Anti-Homsexuality Law if he becomes president of Uganda.
In a statement issued on Monday 05 December, 2023 JEEMA says they are disappointed by Bobi’s accusations against opposition legislators yet he was aware that the law was introduced by Asuman Basalirwa (JEEMA president) and overwhelmingly supported by the whole house.
JEEMA Secretary General Kateregga Mohamed said Bobi’s comments have “deeply troubled members who are seeking to see change of leadership” in Uganda.
“Mr Sentamu, you have the right to support homosexuality without demonizing fellow leaders who have treated you with respect since they came to know you” Kateregga said.
In this statement copied to heads of political parties in Uganda, JEEMA notes that the AHA law is in line with the party beliefs and Bobi should respect MPs who risked their lives and supported it to protect both their cultural and religious values.
“We call upon you to retract your accusations and demonstrate your commitment to a culture of respect and cooperation with fellow leaders” The statement adds.
Bobi’s trip to UK and the interview with BBC followed the lift of a 10-year travel ban on the musician-turned politician, over lyrics he sang which the UK government deemed to be inciting violence against homosexuals.
When the host asked what changed and why he had finally been allowed into UK,
Bobi said he took responsibility, and with age, he has transformed.
