Bukedea Woman MP and Deputy Speaker Anitah Among has been elected speaker of parliament replacing the late Jacob Oulanyah who died in the US on Sunday.
Anitah Among garnered 401 votes beating his rival Asuman Basalirwa in an election held today at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala. Basalirwa who was the opposition flagbearer got 66 votes and one vote was spoilt.
Among has been Jacob Oulanya deputy since May 2021 when the two were elected as speaker and deputy at the same venue.
A flagbearer of the ruling National Resistance Movement, Among was endorsed by the party Central Executive Committee on Tuesday before the NRM parliamentary caucus gave her bid a nod yesterday.
The event was presided over by the Chief Justice Alphonse Owiny Dollo and President Museveni who is also the Chairman of the ruling NRM was in attendance.
