KAMPALA UGANDA: 16 July 2026— In a bid to curb fraud and safeguard property agreements during the ongoing electoral season, Uganda’s Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development has temporarily suspended all campaigning Local Council I (LC I) Chairpersons from participating in land transactions.

The directive was issued in a public notice on Thursday, July 16, 2026, as campaigns for local council leadership approach their final stages.

According to the Ministry, the suspension is a precautionary measure to preserve the integrity of property deals during a highly charged political transition. The government aims to minimize the risk of land disputes, fraud, and other administrative irregularities that often spike when local leaders are focused on campaigns.

Under the new directive, LC I Chairpersons currently running for office must immediately refrain from:

Participating in, witnessing, or endorsing any land agreements, and Recommending or overseeing any land-related transactions.

These restrictions will remain in place until the local council electoral process is officially concluded.

Advisory to the Public

The Ministry has strongly advised citizens to avoid involving campaigning LC I Chairpersons in any real estate or boundary matters. Specifically, the public is warned not to rely on these officials for:

    • The sale or purchase of land.
    • Witnessing or endorsing formal land agreements.
    • Resolving boundary-related disputes.
    • Land ownership verification.
    • Any other transaction requiring local administrative approval.

What to do if you have an urgent transaction:

For urgent property matters, the Ministry advises citizens to bypass local council leaders and instead seek the services of qualified legal practitioners or utilize other lawful, formal channels.

A Plea for Patience

The Ministry urged the public to remain patient until new local leaders are securely in office, emphasizing that taking shortcuts now could result in long-term legal battles.

”This precaution will help prevent costly mistakes and safeguard the interests of all parties,” the statement from the Ministry’s Communications Division read.

For inquiries or to report issues, the Ministry has provided the following official contact channels:

    • WhatsApp: 0767 554 235
