Parliament has tasked KCCA to provide an explanation on unpaid wages of KCCA casual workers.
This matter came up at a time when a team of women casual workers held a peaceful demonstration at parliament.
The workers many of whom are women also demonstrated against delays in their pay and the failure to remit their National Social Security Fund contributions.
The MPs were reacting to communication from the chair on Wednesday during an afternoon plenary session.
According to the Speaker, Anita Among, the constitution provides for equal payment for equal work without discrimination. She urged the leadership of Kampala City Capital Authority to address the aggrieved workers because these workers have families to fend for.
Anita Among, also directed Finance Ministry to explain availability of funds earmarked for payment of KCCA workers.
Legislators have taken KCCA to task to explain why its casual workers have gone five months without pay.
The Acting Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joseph Ssewungu also questioned the kind of contracts being issued to the workers.
The Workers MP, Abdulhu Byakatonda added that late payment of wages to workers is because most of the workers have no contracts. He requested that the Minister of Kampala should appear and give parliament on the issue.
Female Workers MP, Agnes Kunihira asked the house to fast track the Employment Amendment bill that is envisaged to curb exploitation of workers and generally violation of Labour rights.
She said many employers are firing workers verbally while those on jobs are paid “peanuts” and their afflictions are never addressed.
Wakiso district woman MP, Ethel Naluyima said that just like casual workers in KCCA, even those in local government are suffering too.
When put to task, Minister of Kampala, Kabuye Kyofatogabye could not identify the real time frame when the workers have been demanding for their salaries which prompted t speaker to ask him to go and bring a report.
