Uganda’s Commander of Land forces, Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Keinerugaba has said he believes that Uganda and Rwanda will quickly restore the good relations the two countries once enjoyed
Gen Muhoozi’s remarks come just hours after his visit to Rwanda where he held a meeting with the president Gen Paul Kagame during which the two discussed steps needed to restore bilateral ties between Rwanda and Uganda.
Muhoozi, who also Uganda’s first son, was in Rwanda in his capacity as Senior Advisor in charge of Special Operations to the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
Whereas details of the meeting between the two were not immediately made public, Muhoozi said he is confident that the fractured relations that spans close to four years, will soon be history.
“I thank president Kagame for the warm reception my delegation and I received in Kigali today. We held very cordial and in-depth discussions about how to improve our bilateral relations. I am confident that under the leadership of the two presidents, we shall be able to quickly restore our historical good relations” Gen Muhoozi tweeted on Saturday.
Bilateral talks to mend relations between Uganda and Rwanda which culminated into closure of borders between the two countries two years ago gained traction recently with a series of good gestures and exchange of delegations but mainly from the government in Kampala.
Muhoozi’s visit followed that of Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Amb. Adonia Ayebare who was in Kigali last week to transmit a special message from President Museveni of Uganda. Ayebare also doubles as President Museveni’s Special Envoy to Rwanda.
Muhoozi who landed in Kigali at around 10AM is said to have proceeded to have lunch with his host before he departed back to Kampala.
Rwanda has for long protested Uganda’s support towards the elements plotting to destabilise the former.
Another complaint tabled by Rwanda is the continued harassment of Rwandans in Uganda by security operatives where thousands have been illegally detained and dumped at the border without due process.
