President Yoweri Museveni has reassured Ugandans that his government will defeat terrorism and all forms of criminality happening now in the country, as it has done before.
Museveni’s remarks come in the wake of a bomb attack last night in Kwata village, Komamboga near the capital Kampala, in which 2 people are suspected to have died and atleast 7 sustained serious injuries.
According to police, the explosion went off at 9PM on Saturday at Digida Pork Joint in Komamboga, a popular spot that hosts many customers especially on weekends.
In a tweet posted on Sunday, President Museveni said he has been breifed about the incident and it seems to be a terrorist attack.
“The information I have is that three people came and left a package in a kaveera which later exploded killing 1 person and injuring 5 others. It seems to be a terrorists attack and we shall get the perpetrators.” Museveni posted.
Museveni says, Police specialists are on the ground investigating the whole incident and soon police will provide guidelines to the public on vigilance on how to deal with possible terrorists.
“The public should not fear. We shall defeat this criminality like we have defeated all other criminality committed by pigs who dont respect life” he said.
The attack however comes a few days after the United Kingdom (UK) warned that terrorists could carry out an attack in Uganda, an alert police dismissed saying there is no need to elevate the threat levels.
In a statement released on October 15th 2021, the UK government called on their nationals to be extremely vigilant about their security “especially in crowded and public places like hotels, transport hubs, restaurants and bars, and during major gatherings like sporting or religious events”.
In the statement, UK Counter Terrorism Policing noted that the attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners. It also issued information and advice to UK citizens on staying safe abroad and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack.
