An armed Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) soldier on Monday went on rampage in Nansana, Gganda, Wakiso District shooting five people dead including 2 Local Defense Unit personnel.
Lance Corporal Omara Denis Awillo shot and killed 2 Local Defense Unit personnel, one civilian and 1 special police constable before he was also put killed by security agencies.
Earlier reports had indicated that the culprit is an LDU personnel but the spokesperson for the Defense Ministry, Lt. Col. Deo Akiiki confirmed that he is a non-commissioned officer in the UPDF.
In a statement, Lt. Deo Akiiki however did not state the identities of the victims or what could have triggered the shooting. He said joint investigations have commenced to ascertain details concerning the matter.
The culprit according to Deo Akiiki was gunned down in self defense and to stop his wanton actions.
Reports however confirmed that the gunman was in possession of two guns which he used to kill the victims.
Eye witnesses also confirmed one of the victims (female) was driving a vehicle registration number UAJ 705U.
Earlier reports also indicated that one of the victims was a juvenile which has not been indicated in the statement from UPDF.
Akiiki however said more details about the incident will be given to the public as investigations into the matter proceed.
