KAMPALA 25 MARCH 2025: Faridah Nambi, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate in the Kawempe North by-election, has withdrawn her court petition seeking a vote recount.
Nambi had petitioned the Kawempe Chief Magistrate’s Court to recount the votes after the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) Nalukoola Luyimbazi was declared the winner of the election.
In a March 25 letter to the Kawempe Chief Magistrate, Nambi, through her lawyers Atwijukire Dennis Advocates, stated that the petition seeking a vote recount had been overtaken by events.
Nambi’s legal team explained that the Electoral Commission had already gazetted the results of the Kawempe North by-election, declaring Nalukoola Luyimbazi as the winner, and as such, the petition was no longer relevant.
“We have instructions from the applicant to withdraw the above application. The Electoral Commission has already gazetted Mr Elias Nalukoola and so the application has been overtaken by events,” the letter reads.
The Electoral Commission on Monday, March 24, officially gazetted the results of the Kawempe North by-election the previous day, confirming Nalukoola Luyimbazi as the winner of the seat.
The withdrawal of the petition signals a concession by Ms Nambi and her party after 10 days of swearing to overturn the results in court of law.
