The EC Chairperson, Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon has announced that the by-election to elect a Member of Parliament for Kawempe North Division to replace the late Hon Seggirinya Muhammad will be on 13th March 2025.
Ssegirinya (37 years old) died on January 9, 2025 and had been elected to represent Kawempe North in 2021. The current law provides for a period of 60 days within which an MP must be replaced in case his/her seat falls vacant.
Byabakama made the announcement at a meeting with stakeholders local leaders, political leaders, political party representatives, religious leaders, police representatives, media, in Kawempe Division North at Tick Hotel.
The EC has set 26th to 27th February 2025 as dates for nominations of candidates who wish to replace Hon Muhammad Ssegirinya. Nominations will be conducted at the office of the returning officer for Kawempe Division.
The by-election however comes barely few months to the general elections when all political positions will again be contested for. Currently, the EC is conducting a general update of voters’ register across the country. The EC has been criticized for not conducting adequate voter education and hence low turn-up for the rather important exercise.
On it’s progress, Byabakama reporter that a considerable number of voters have been checking and confirming their particulars using @UgandaEC online portal (http://ec.or.ug/register), hence therefore there is no need to have long queues at update centres.
