A veteran politician and a businessman, Ssebagala had plans to contest again for the LordMayorship in the upcoming general elections.
A subscribed member of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Ssebagala had already picked nomination papers to contest for the position.
Ssebagala came into political limelight in 1998 when he gave a shot at the mayorship of Kampala City under the Democratic Party, a race he won beating government leaning candidates.
He was however arrested in the United States a few moths later on charges of fraud and slapped with a 15 month jail sentence before he returned to Uganda in February 2000.
He again contested and won the mayorship in 2006 and served a five-year term but could not succeed in getting another term of office.
In 2011, President Museveni appointed Ssebagala a minister without portfolio but his appointment was rejected by the parliamentary appointments committee on grounds of having a criminal record and having no academic qualifications for the job.
Museveni later appointed him a presidential adviser. Lately, he announced he was joining the opposition NUP, and picked nomination forms to contest under their flag.
