Six villages of Kigali City were on Thursday, June 25 put under a 15-day total Covid-19 lockdown in a bid to prevent the spread of the virus in other areas.
The directive was announced by the Ministry of Local Government, explaining that the decision was based on analysis. Authorities say the total lockdown is one of the efforts to contain Covid-19 that has since the beginning of this week been spreading in Kigali.
The 6 villages that have been put on lockdown are: Kamabuye in Nyarurama cell in Kigarama Sector, Zuba in Nyarurama cell- Kigarama Kicukiro, Nyenyeri in Bwerankori cell Kigarama Sector, Kicukiro District, Rugano, Kanunga cell Gikondo Sector, Kadobogo, in Kigali cell Kigali Sector -Nyarugenge District, and Gisenga, Kigali cell -Kigali Sector, Nyarugenge District.
This decision follows a trend of new positive cases being detected in the city. For instance, since June 21 twenty-one cases have been confirmed in Kigali city alone.
According to the authorities, they will continue to monitor the trend and more neighborhoods may be put on lockdown.
Residents in the 6 villages are not allowed to get out while those doing work will only do it from home. Movements between the six cells and other neighbouring areas are prohibited unless for those having health reasons or other understandable issues.
Early May, authorities in Rwanda announced loosening of the lockdown in Kigali in which public and private transport was opened, restaurants and hotels were allowed to open. Bars and churches and schools however remained closed.
By Thursday, Rwanda had 850 confirmed coronavirus cases, of which 463 are active. 2 people have died in Rwanda due to COVID-19 while 385 have recovered from the disease.
