Link Bus Driver seen texting while driving apprehended and charged -Police

The Link Bus driver who was seen in the viral video using his phone while driving along Kampala – Fortportal road has been arrested and charged for violating traffic rules -according to Uganda Police.

The driver identified as Andrew Jemba (43 years old) is seen on the steering but freely texting using his phone, as the passenger bus he is driving speeds fast on a busy highway. In the video, Jemba even takes hands off the steering in total disregard of the safety of passengers.

In a statement issued on November 1, 2023, the PRO traffic and Road safety Michael Kananura, Jemba was detained at around 11AM at Kyegegwa Police Station and charged under Regulation 3(a) & 4 of Traffic and Road Safety (Restriction of Use of Mobile Telephone) Regulations, 2004.

The bus he was driving was also identified as registration number UBG 188P belonging to Link Bus transport company.

In a statement, his employers acknowledged the reckless driving their employer exhibited and regretted the incident. The company also made assurances that punitive action has been taken against the errant driver.

The police commended the public for the vigilance on road safety, and called upon members of the public to continue reporting and sharing any information on traffic violations on roads on their toll-free line 0800199099.
