Police warns NUP over heightened terror attacks by ADF in Kampala

Police authorities in Uganda have appealed to the NUP to ensure their mobilisation activities are held indoors, in the face of “heightened terror threats” in metropolitan Kampala.

The police warning comes amid uncertainty over planned opposition rallies in Kampala, following mammoth crowds that characterized NUP rallies in Luweero and Nakaseke Central Uganda. Coincidentally, police last week intercepted and destroyed 6 bombs in Kampala, allegedly planted by the ADF –a terrorists group operating in the neighboring Congo DRC.

On Monday September 11th 2024, the police spokesperson, SCP Fred Enanga said the move will help NUP party and its delegates to exercise their constitutional rights peacefully, while upholding the rule of law.

“As you are all aware, the Kampala Metropolitan Area and other areas in the country, are characterized by heightened terror activities of the ADF. And given the nature of political mobilisation, where the NUP convoy moves at a slow pace, disrupting traffic and congestion, continued use of untrained guards, exposure at the top of the motor vehicle, amidst thousands of supporters, well wishers and onlookers, makes him an attractive and soft target for the terrorists.” Enanga stated.

“We absolutely understand the concern of NUP supporters about these processions, but as the Joint Security Agencies, we are more concerned by terror threats, which would risk the safety of the NUP leader and his supporters. We are aware several NUP bloggers and propagandists are likely to release propaganda, in response to the police appeal and instruction.” Enanga adds.

Police however reassured NUP leaders of guaranteed security during town hall meetings, with restricted number of participants, who can be checked and secured by the police. And further urged them to work with the District Security Committee in advance, for thorough security planning.

In a statement of caution, police highlights its commitment to protecting the public, amidst the existing threats stating that public safety is paramount for everyone (our families, neighbours and our businesses).
