2 Uganda people’s Defence Force commanders in Somalia will face the court martial for charges related to last week’s bloody attack by Alshabab militants.
This was revealed by president Yoweri Museveni in an update to members of the NRM parliamentary caucus, during the ongoing party retreat in Kyankwanzi.
Museveni notes that the mistake was made by two commanders, Maj. Oluka and Maj. Obbo, who ordered the soldiers to retreat and they have been apprehended and will face charges in the Court Martial.
He also confirmed that 54 UPDF soldiers including a commander were killed in the attack.
“Our soldiers demonstrated remarkable resilience and reorganized themselves, resulting in the recapture of the base.
We discovered the lifeless bodies of fifty-four fallen soldiers, including a Commander.” Museveni revealed in a statement shared on social media.
Last week on Friday, the UPDG FOB in Buulo Mareer, lower Shabelle region of Somalia was attacked and overrun by the militants who also destroyed equipment forcing the peacekeepers to retreat 9KM away.
Museveni also states that the terrorists attempted another ill-fated attack on Baraawe Town, but UPDF dealt a significant blow, forcing them to flee.
Media quoted the army spokesperson Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye saying the process to return bodies of the fallen updf soldiers will start in the week starting tommorow.
