Sylvia Mulinge named MTN Uganda’s new CEO replacing Wim Vanhelleputte

MTN Uganda has named Sylvia Mulinge new CEO effective October 1, 2022 to replace Wim Vanhelleputte at the firm.

Chairman of the Board of Directors, Charles Mbire, said Sylvia Mulinge is responsible for several roles including driving the consumer telecoms business managing the overall brand, and leading the transformation of the brand to become a digital lifestyle enabler of consumers’ lives.

“I would like to welcome Sylvia Mulinge to MTN Uganda. I believe that her experience will be beneficial to MTN, particularly given her alignment to our strategic intent of leading digital solutions for Africa’s progress,” he said.

“The Board is confident that Ms. Mulinge will continue the work of growing the Company as a leading provider of telecommunications and digital solutions.” Mbire said.

In the interim, the current Chief Financial Officer, Andrew Bugembe, has been appointed as Acting Chief Executive Officer effective August 1, 2022, until September 30, 2022.

Mulinge joined Safaricom in 2007 and has occupied various senior roles over the years, including Head of Retail, Head of Sales, and Director of Consumer Business.

She is a graduate of the University of Nairobi, Kenya, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree (first-class honours).

She is still the Safaricom’s Chief Consumer Business Officer. Her last working day is September 30th.

On the other hand, the Belgian, Vanhelleputte was appointed MTN Uganda’s Chief Executive Officer at the end of July 2016, replacing Brian Gouldie who left after two years in the position.

Vanhelleputte was also chief executive of MTN in Ivory Coast (April 2009-July 2015) before joining Bharti Airtel where he headed a business unit in charge of Gabon, Congo B, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Madagascar and the Seychelles.
