National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer for the Kampala Lord Mayoral seat Latif Ssebagala has stepped down from the race, citing the need to maintain unity for the good of the opposition.

Latif’s announcement comes a few days after he was picked as the favorite candidate for NUP to hold the party’s flag in the mayoral race over singer Joseph Mayanja also known as Jose Chameleon.

He however said he will remain a member of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and he will still give all my support to Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu for the presidency.

The real reason for Latif’s sudden change of heart is yet to be established.

Reports of his decision to quit the race first made rounds in media on Saturday before he was declared the party’s choice for the flag. He went on to speak to the press about his resolve to contest and win the Mayorship.

“In a few days, I shall inform the people of a kampala our campaign plans and strategies and how we hope to traverse for votes throughout kampala. We shall also be giving you information on the nominations programs and the so many activities we have lined up for this campaign season.
We shall unveil our coordination teams in various divisions, launch the Lord Mayorship coordination offices and also launch our campaign manifesto in due time. I am charged, energized, hungry and ready to hand over the city of Kampala into the hands of NUP led by Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi” Latif posted on Facebook yesterday.

As it stands, NRM’s Daniel Kazibwe, Joseph Mayanja and Democratic Party’s Beatrice Kayanja will tussle it out with the incumbent Erias Rukwago for the Lord Mayorship for Kampala City.
