Rukutana arrested over gun violence; charged with attempted murder

Police in Ntungamo district has arrested and detained the State Minister for Labour, Hon Mwesigwa Rukutana.

According to the Uganda Police Deputy Spokesperson, Polly Namaye, Rukutana has been detained with his three escorts following a shooting incident in Ruhama, Ntungamo district.

Police also says, one person was seriously injured and a motor vehicle damaged.

Rukutana’s arrest follows an election on Friday in which he lost the vote for Rushenyi constituency for which he is the incumbent MP, against challenger Naome Kabasharira.

The victim according to police was rushed to hospital in critical condition while Rukutana and other suspects are in detention on charges of inciting violence, attempted murder by shooting and malicious damage.

Police however did not provide more details of the arrest including the detention center but promised to provide them later.

In a video clip that has been circulating on social media, Rukutana is seen holding a gun in an attempt to shoot at some people who were locked in a car.

Several pictures have also been circulating on various forums, showing Rukutana wielding a gun while others show the victims with an injury on the head.
