Supporter set ablaze as NRM EC suspends elections in Mawogola North

An NRM supporter in Mawogola North is nursing serious wounds after rival supporters set him on fire ahead of a combustive party primary election in the area.

A one Nuwamanya Haruna, an agent of Sharsti Kutesa -daughter to Foreign Affairs minister Sam Kutesa was allegedly set ablaze last night by supporters of her rival Godfrey Aine Sodo Kaguta leaving him with life threatening injuries.

At around midnight on Thursday, Haruna says he sniffed petrol on entering his house before the whole room blew up in flames. He luckily escaped through the door which was still open only to be save by neighbors who used all means to put out the fire.

The incident happened in Market Zone, Sembabule Town Council. Haruna says supporters of Sodo Kaguta had openly warned him to stop supporting Shartsi, or face the consequences.

The Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission, Dr Tanga Odoi has suspended party primary elections in Mawogola North due to escalating violence.

Suspension of the elections follows repeated acts of electoral violence between supporters of Aine Godfrey Kaguta alaso known as Sodo, and Sharsti Kutesa who are vying for the constituency MP seat. Sodo is the youngest brother of President Museveni who is also the chairman of the ruling NRM party.

Mawogola North elections were suspended a day after elections in the neighboring Mawogola South were also suspended over the same reasons. The constituency spot is hotly contested between Hanifa Kawooya and Joseph Sekabiito.
