Former Kampala Capital City Deputy Lord Mayor, Ms Sarah Kanyike has been sworn in as state minister for Disabilities and the Elderly.

Ms Kanyike’s swearing in ceremony was held today at State House Entebbe.

In a congratulatory message posted on social media, President Museveni however ridiculed the Kampala City Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago saying he almost got a heart attack following Kanyike’s appointment.

“I congratulate Ms. Sarah Kanyike upon her appointment as State Minister for Disabilities and the Elderly. I want to express sympathy to my son Lukwago (Erias) who almost got a heart attack because I captured a big fish from my old party -DP” Museveni tweeted.

“I am happy with people like Ms. Kanyike who put the problems of the people ahead of party differences. What Uganda needs is unity aimed at serving our people.” he added.

Kanyike’s appointment dealt a big blow to Erias Lukwago, a strong critic of President Museveni’s government. Lukwago did not hide his emotions and went on to give Kanyike 3 days to either take or decline Museveni’s offer which the latter did.

The Lord Mayor quickly replaced Kanyike with the Makerere University Councillor Doreen Nyanjura, who now serves as deputy lord mayor.

“This is a strategy to bring all the serious elements together, around a program of unity for Uganda and Africa so that we can solve our problems, I welcome Sarah in this endeavor of unity to solve our problems.” Museveni said.
