To fans and followers of Charles Odongtho, the long wait is finally over after it has been confirmed that he will be unveiled in a new political talk-show on Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) next week on Wednesday.
A senior Journalist who became popular for his Thursday evening program “The Frontline” on NBS TV, Charles Odongtho has confirmed what this website published in May, that he was joining UBC to host a program similar to the Frontline.
Odongtho’s name became synonymous with NBS’s popular talkshow –NBS Frontline, a current affairs program in which he used to host DP’s president Nobert Mao, NRM government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo and Hon. Miria Matembe.
Speaking to this website today, Odongtho confirmed that the premier show “Behind the Headlines” will be aired on Wednesday at 10PM, hosting a team of experienced and renown panelists.
According to Charles, Behind the headlines will have political commentators; Hon. Abdu Katuntu; a senior lawyer and experienced legislator, Rhamathan Ngobi, an economics lecturer at the Makerere University Business School and Hon. Margaret Muhanga, a Development Consultant and veteran journalist with legislative experience of 10 years in parliament.
The show will also host a special guest every week, more like what NBS’s Frontline which Odongtho started, does.
The aim according to Charles, is to put together a credible show which is authoritative, definitive in information and not premised on emotions. He says there has been a slump in quality of debate on most of the talk-shows and yet Ugandans are yearning for such especially as the country enters a political season.
“Dialogue is the beginning of Democracy. Constructive, and Informed Dialogue, is even better, and more worthy! At a critical time of elections, Uganda needs an alternative platform for people to know what goes on behind the scenes. Be ready for real debate” Odongtho said.
On whether he wouldn’t be compromised by the state since UBC is state managed, Odongtho said professionalism is what he takes to UBC. Odongtho assured his fans and Ugandans that he is going to take to UBC professionalism, experience, objectivity all in a show he believes will bring real competition to big talk-shows in the industry.
Having left NBS in March this year, Odongtho maintains that his potential to build massive talkshows from a scratch is undisputed having made a mark at NTV’s Newsnight, and NBS Frontline, a show he says is his brainchild.
He reiterated optimism in building on UBC’s huge broadcast network coverage and the best signal it has in the country. He says, with 12-plus Radio stations and 3 TV stations under UBC, he has a huge opportunity to exploit; reaching multitudes and influencing public debate.
He however could not give details about his contract especially what he will be earning but assured sabasaba that he had more than 6 offers from different media organizations seeking his services and he picked the best offer.
