The COVID-19 response committee today reported that a total of 21BN has so far been collected in donations ever since the fund was established.
On 8th April 2020, President Museveni appointed a committee of 15 people with a mandate of mobilizing resources for the fight against the COVID pandemic and enable provision of relief to vulnerable persons.
In a report released today, citizens, corporate entities and well-wishers have contributed UGX. 7BN cash, 4BN in pledges, 50 vehicles valued at UGX. 5BN shillings, Foodstuffs, medical equipment and others all valued at UGX. 5BN.
According to the committee Chairman Emmanuel Katongole, the COVID fund’s goal is to raise 170BN shillings to be utilized by the ministry of health for test kits, personal protection equipment and other needs of the ministry and government.
The fund will also raise 10 vehicles for each of the districts of Uganda to enable health workers to quickly respond to emergencies.
The fund also reported that President Museveni donated 1.4 million shillings part of his monthly pay to the COVID-19 fund.
Mr. Emannuel Katongole thanked donors for the generosity exhibited but called on well-wishers to continue supporting the initiative.
The committee also appealed to Cabinet ministers, MPs, Judges, Permanent Secretaries, Directors and Commissioners, salary earners, civil servants, business people and private sector players to emulate the presidents example and contribute part of their salary as a donation to the fund.
Committee members said they have committed 1M shillings each, and pledged to commit to accountability of the donations collected.
