Police officers who were Monday deployed at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, Wakiso District, to block a scheduled press conference by the leaders of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), have arrested the party’s former president, Dr Kizza Besigye.
Police smashed the windscreen of Dr Besigye’s car before pulling him out.
They took him to a waiting police vehicle and drove to an unknown destination.
Before his arrest however, Besigye survived death twice after he was hit by a strong stream of water from a police water cannon that swept him off the top of his vehicle almost sending him to the tarmac.
Besigye struggled to hang on, and was helped to get back in the vehicle while he was still hanging on the front windscreen.
Earlier, police had stopped FDC officials from holding their weekly press conference at the stadium.
The press conference that is usually held at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, was shifted to the stadium since party leaders had planned to hold their governance seminar at the venue after the press briefing.
After being blocked from accessing the stadium, Dr Kizza Besigye, the former president of the party, decided to drive to Najjanankumbi as a procession of supporters followed him.
