Thousands participate in Rotary Cancer Run 2019

Speaker Rebecca Kadaga flagging off participants at Kololo

More than 50,000 participants turned up on Sunday to participate in the 8th Edition of the Rotary Cancer Run at Kololo Independence Ceremonial Grounds.

This year’s run has attracted over 50,000 runners across the country to raise part of the approximately 18b Uganda Shillings required facilitate construction of bunkers to house linear accelerators used in the treatment of cancers.

The runners were flagged off by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, and at least 778 million Uganda Shillings has been collected in the 2019 Rotary Cancer Run.

The proceeds from the cancer run will go towards the construction of bunkers needed for the installation of linear accelerators at Nsambya Hospital. A linear accelerator is a modern cancer treatment machine.

This 8th edition of the Rotary Cancer Run was launched last month by Rt. Hon. Rebbeca Kadaga breaking the ground for the construction of bunkers needed for the installation of linear accelerators at Nsambya Hospital.

According to Rotary’s District Governor  Stephen Mwanje, the government needs USD 5 million (18 billion shillings) to put up a specialized facility where all types of cancers can be treated with in the country.

This, is meant to ease access to medical treatment for cancers abroad which is also very expensive.

He however, said that for this year alone, their target was to raise 1 billion shillings but only 778 million has been collected countrywide.

Over UGX1.6b has been raised so far from the previous three runs since 2015.

The 8th edition was sponsored by the Parliament of Uganda, Centenary Bank and supported by New Vision, UAP Insurance, Liquid Telecom,
Uganda Petroleum Authority, Maad Advertising, Events Warehouse, and
Rwenzori Mineral Water among others.
