Speaker Among meets delegation from Forum of Parliaments in the Great Lakes region

The Speaker of Parliament Anita Among this afternoon met a delegation from the Forum of Parliaments of the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region (FP-ICGLR) led by the Secretary General of the Body ,Amb. Onyango Kakoba.

The forum brings together national parliaments of the twelve (12) member-states of ICGLR, namely; Angola, Burundi, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia. Its main objective is to make a significant parliamentary contribution to the implementation of the Pact on Security, Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region.

The team briefed the Speaker and Commissioners of Ugandan Parliament the events at the entity, the achievements registered since its establishment and it’s financial situation.

The team also briefed the Speaker on what transpired at the last sitting during which the members paid tribute to the former Speaker of Parliament, the Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah (RIP).

The Speaker assured the team of Uganda’s commitment to the body and other international entities that it is associated with.

She thanked them for honoring the former Speaker and assured them that quick action will be taken to fill the four vacancies that need Ugandan MPS to fill in the different organs of the body.

The FP-ICGLR intervenes in the following areas where it has corresponding committees: Democracy and Good Governance, Peace and Security, Humanitarian and Social Issues, Economic Development, Natural Resources and Regional Integration and Issues of Gender, Children and Vulnerable persons.

In accordance with Article 6 of the Inter-parliamentary Accord Establishing the FP-ICGLR, the Plenary Assembly which is the highest organ of the body can deliberate on all matters falling within the scope of the Forum.
