The National Drug Authority (NDA) has directed all drugshops, pharmacies and general mechandize shops in Uganda to immediately stop stocking and sale of M-Magic Coffee -an instant coffee product marketed as a dietary supplement for sexual enhancement.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, NDA raised concern over M-Magix Coffee which is sold on claims that it keeps men strong after it was confirmed that it contained an erectile dysfunction drug with serious side effects.
According to NDA, the move followed a tip from a member of the public who consumed coffee and developed an “unusual erectile” condiction which prompted an investigation into the ingridients of the ‘power coffee.’
“National Drug Authority undertook laboratory analysis of M-Magix coffee, samples picked from the market and results confirmed that the product is udulterated with Sildenafil Citrate.”
NDA says, Sildenafil Nitrate is a drug for erectile dysfunction which must be used under strict prescription by a qualified medical personnel as it has serious side effects including extreme stomach complications, respiratory and heart problems, renal failure, and sometimes leading to comma and even death.
“The public is strongly warned against using M-Magix coffee and NDA hereby directs all pharmacies, drug shops, and general mechandize shops to stop stocking and sale of this product” NDA statement reads in part.
According to the statement, NDA has directed the importer of M-Magix coffe to stop importation and to recall all the supplied batches with immediate effect.
In June 2010, U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning for the public to stop using Magic Power Coffee
claiming it contains a chemical, hydroxythiohomosildenafil, which is similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra.
FDA claimed M-Magix contains a chemical that can cause dangerously low blood pressure.
The agency warned the public that sexual enhancement products that claim to work as well as prescription drugs “are likely to expose consumers to unpredictable risks” and the potential for injury or death.
Magic Power Coffee, which calls itself the “world’s first passion coffee,” is also sold online and by independent distributors.
